More than a collection of signs
Sign Programs
A sign program is more than a collection of signs. It is a coordinated installation in which the signs are carefully related to each other by function and appearance. A sign program contains five important characteristics:
Functional The primary purpose of a sign program is to enable an individual to find his or her way to a specific destination, and often to find their way back to where they started. Additional purposes are to encourage safety and to provide general information.
Cost Effective The overall design and implementation costs of the sign program must meet the budgetary and scheduling requirements of the customer. In this regard, the signs should not be beyond the number needed, or be more elaborate than is required.
Well-Designed The sign program must consist of a family of sign types that complement the architectural character of the facility, and which are also compatible with any existing, relevant graphic design standards.
Code Compliant Regulatory requirements, such as local sign ordinances, and state building codes must be carefully reviewed during the design process. National regulations, issued by ADA, NFPA, and OSHA, must also be followed.
Adaptable A formal process for maintaining and updating the sign program should be established. This will permit the signs to be quickly modified, or added to, as changes take place.
